SHIATSU MASSAGE FOR MIGRAINES

WHAT IS SHIATSU THERAPY?Shiatsu Massage Lethbridge

Shiatsu massage is a Japanese style of massage based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and involves the application of sustained pressure to specific points on the body.  From a Western perspective, the points follow muscle lines, nerve pathways, and blood vessels and applying pressure can release muscular tension, relieve pain, increase circulation, boost the immune system and help muscles, nerves and organs to function at their best. The pressure is usually applied with thumbs, but fingers, palms or elbows can be used.

 WHO CAN RECEIVE SHIATSU THERAPY?

Generally, treatment can be done on anyone, regardless of age or health. However, the best practice is to use gentler pressure on children, the elderly and in areas of injury or inflammation. Shiatsu Therapy, in general, is extremely beneficial for relaxation, stress management, as a preventative treatment and to treat specific conditions.

CAN I RECEIVE A TREATMENT WHILE I HAVE A MIGRAINE?

YES, ABSOLUTELY!!!

4 Elements Healing Massage is trained in Shiatsu Massage for the Effective Treatment of Migraines. This training has two specific protocols which are meant to target migraines while a client is having one and prevent them from reoccurring.

DOES THIS TREATMENT ONLY WORK FOR MIGRAINES?

NO! Because the treatment protocols are designed to target the face, head, neck, AND shoulders, it is beneficial for tension headaches, stress headaches, sinus headaches, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), tight shoulders and neck pain.

COMMON TRIGGERS

There is a wide range of triggers, and for many sufferers, it can be a combination of two or three factors. They may occur with no trigger at all, and although identifying triggers can help to manage or avoid migraines, many are out of our control:
Food & drink (red wine, caffeine, aged cheese, MSG)
Chemicals (scented products, cleaning products, paint, varnish)
Environmental (seasonal changes, change in barometric pressure – thank you, Lethbridge!),
Health (dehydration, eye strain, hunger, allergies, hormonal changes).

Not all severe headaches are due to migraines; they can be a warning sign of a more serious condition. A client should be concerned or seek immediate medical care if:
Headaches change in character over time
A headache also presents with loss of sensation in the body, weakness, double vision or ataxia (loss of full control of bodily movements)
Headaches last longer than 72 hours
A headache develops after major injury or head trauma
A headache is associated with stiff neck or fever
